What HAPPENED? AND HOW DID HE END UP IN THE ORIGINAL TOP GUNS?

Maverick and Goose meet two MIGs during the opening scene of the film. They are then inducted into Top Gun Academy, the final school for the most elite navy pilots.

During a training exercise, Maverick flew through the jetwash of Tom “Iceman” Kazinsky’s aircraft. This caused both engines to flare out, sending Goose’s plane plunging to the ground in an unbearable flat spin.

Maverick and Goose both eject from their doomed aircraft, but as their seats have been jettisoned and Goose is propelled into its canopy head-first, Goose is then killed by the impact.

Top Gun: Goose’s death is not Maverick’s fault; it’s Iceman’s

Maverick claimed that he was responsible for Goose’s tragic death during Top Gun training, but Iceman was the one to blame.

Warning! Top Gun: Maverick Spoilers

Nick “Goose”, Bradshaw’s (Anthony Edwards’) tragic death in Top Gun was not Pete “Maverick’ Mitchell’s fault (Tom Cruise), but Tom “Iceman’ Kazansky’s (Val Kilmer). Tony Scott’s 1986 action-adventure film was fun and exciting for its first two acts. But, Goose died in a tragic training accident. This was a pivotal moment in the film. It served as a turning point for Maverick, who has always been a fighter pilot.

Maverick and Goose were introduced as flying partners. Their friendship grew beyond their professional careers. They are also great friends outside work. Top Gun established this relationship when Goose’s family visited the academy. Goose’s wife, Carole (Meg Ryan), loved Maverick and teased him about his past love life before his new girlfriend, Charlotte “Charlie” (Kelli McGillis). Carole did not blame Goose for his death. She instead encouraged him to fly, knowing how difficult it would have been for him without his RIO.

However, this didn’t help Maverick and might have made matters worse by him believing that Goose died because of his actions. Although he was cleared by the board, Maverick still harbours regret over what happened to Goose. He even considered leaving the Navy.

Although it is understandable that he felt this way, considering that he was the pilot of the plane Goose was riding at the time, Iceman was responsible for the accident. Now, this technicality is more important than ever for the franchise, especially after the long-awaited sequel to the ’80s classic, Top Gun: Maverick.

Why Goose’s death in Top Gun was Iceman’s fault

Maverick, Iceman, and their respective RIOs were the TOPGUN batch’s top two trainees. They entered the tandem training session in Top Gun, motivated to be the winner. They were placed together against their superiors but earned points individually. They were eventually able to get in front of LCDR Rick Heatherly (Michael Ironside ), giving them an opportunity to win for the trainees.

Iceman was able to get in front of Maverick, Goose and the other trainees but couldn’t get a clear shot. Although he was repeatedly asked to leave the area so Maverick could take over, he refused to do so. He tried desperately to stop Jester from scoring points and to defeat him. Iceman couldn’t lock Jester’s plane no matter what he did, and he eventually broke off. Iceman was too late to get out of the way.

Maverick was too close to his tail, and caused him to fly straight through the jet wash. His aircraft suffered a flameout, with both engines exploding and ending in a fatal flat turn. Maverick was able safely to eject, but Goose couldn’t. He hit the canopy while he was trying to escape, causing an intense impact that led him to his death.

The whole incident could have been avoided if Iceman had given Maverick the opportunity when he first asked. Iceman’s stubbornness was not only tragic but also showed how individualistic he is. Maverick got into trouble for abandoning Rick “Hollywood” Wip Hubley to pursue CDR Mike “Viper” Metcalf (Tom Skerritt). Iceman should have been reprimanded.

At the minimum, he should have been scolded or his points reduced. Otherwise, he should have been investigated as Maverick. But that was not the case. He was able to escape with his life, and he emerged as TOPGUN’s top pilot. Maverick appeared to have made peace with Goose’s passing and was able to move on mentally at the conclusion of Top Gun. This is not the case in the franchise.
