Spoilers in the coming weeks in Stranger Things season 4 part 1.
As Stranger Things season 4 starts, Hopper is a prisoner in Russia working manual work. It’s a pity. However, there’s a conclusion near. Hopper had bribed one of the prisoners, Dmitri (Tom Wlaschiha), and convinced him to let him go in exchange for a hefty reward. They coordinate a package delivered to California Joyce’s house to inform Joyce of the fact that Hopper is alive and that she can see him with a few restrictions.
Joyce gets scared that Hop may be alive and asks Murray (Brett Gelman) to help her to figure out what’s going on. They agree to collaborate with Dmitri and soon are on their journey towards Alaska to meet with a drug smuggler called Yuri (Nikola Djuricko), who will take Hopper at $40,000. It appears that the strategy could be successful. Hopper even experiences an unsettling prison break. It’s not an easy task, and he wounds himself quite severely and then is released and hides out in the town nearby.
Yuri’s only thing remains to travel to Russia and then pick Hopper off of the hideout, but an incredibly petty act of betrayal has been committed. It seems like Yuri isn’t a good person to trust in the end. Who would have thought?

Fortunately, they all survived, and the situation is now Joyce and Murray are held by Yuri as a hostage. They want him to take them to the place of hiding and assist them in finding Hopper. There is a lot of hope that they’ll locate him, but it may be too for them to wait. Dmitri was sentenced to be a prisoner in the jail after he lied to his guards. The two Hop prepare for a more significant threat than prison – Demogorgon. There’s been talk about a monster lurking within their ranks, and Hop knows its nature precisely.
In the evening, the prisoners are taken into a chamber with food ready for them. Although they think they need to be strong to defeat the beast, Hop tells them it’s because guards want them to be attractive and fat enough for the beast to eat. He’s fought Demogorgons before and knows what to expect. However, he also has some tricks on how to beat one.
Murray arrives in the jail, pretending to appear to be Yuri and Joyce, with Joyce and Yuri together as his prisoner. He takes them inside while guards explain the fight they’re about to witness. They stand by while Hopper, Dmitri, and the other prisoners fight the Demogorgon. Of course, Murray and Joyce are stunned and realize they must take action to help Hopper escape alive. Luckily, Hopper can protect himself from the monster while Murray is threatening one of the guards, and then goes inside to attempt to unlock the door to allow Hopper to escape. Hopper and Joyce succeed in escaping, as do Hop and Dmitri can escape the Demogorgon.
Hopper is stunned to find Joyce waiting in the prison waiting for his return, and they have an incredibly touching hug. This is the only glimpse of the trio during season 4, part 1, which means we don’t witness Hopper’s escape from prison.
