“The board applies its discretionary judgment to protect the right of free expression for all people and ensure that their rights are respected,” it writes. “The board’s decisions to affirm or reverse Facebook’s decision-making on content are binding, which means that Facebook must follow through with the decisions unless it would violate the law.”

A few quick facts:

  • The goal of the board is to encourage freedom of expression.
  • It will provide suggestions on the pertinent Facebook Company Content Policy to Instagram and Facebook.
  • The company will then examine a few “highly famous” cases to determine whether decisions were taken in line with Facebook’s values and policies.

Who sits on the board?

The board is expected to eventually comprise 40 members drawn from diverse disciplines.

The current board includes nine women and ten men comprising Australia, Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, Denmark, Hungary, Israel, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Pakistan, Senegal, Taiwan and Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

They are human rights lawyers, journalists, LGBTQ+ activists, allies of minorities, and lawyers based in international law, constitutional law, intellectual property, international policy, and diverse other fields.

The board claims to be guided by five fundamentals:

  1. People have a voice.
  2. Promoting authenticity
  3. Make sure you have a safe place.
  4. Protection of privacy
  5. And encouraging dignity.

What’s new?

From October of 2020, if any, it was taken off of Facebook and Instagram, and the user was not happy with Facebook’s review decision to remove it. This content would be suitable for a final appeal before the Oversight Board.

  • Facebook may have already re-examined its initial decision.
