3.Five percent less of the oceans on Earth have been discovered.

As per the Ocean Service, man has discovered just five percent of the oceans that exist on Earth. Researchers are constantly seeking out more. We’re constantly discovering our oceans more.

4. The longest mountain chain in the world is submerged.

The longest mountain chain on Earth, known as The Mid-Ocean Ridge, is almost completely under the ocean, extending over 65,000 kilometers. It’s believed that the Mid-Ocean Ridge chain isn’t as explored as that of Venus and Mars.

5. There are more historical artifacts under the sea than in every museum in the world.

There are more than 1,000 shipwrecks within the Florida Keys alone. Some of them are located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Other underwater museums have been built in recent times, such as the submerged bronze sculpture of the Mediterranean Christ of the Abyss.

6. We know only a small fraction of marine species found in our oceans.

As per the World Register of Marine Species, there are currently 240,470 recognized species. However, it is believed that this is only a tiny fraction of the species and new marine life being discovered every day.

7. More than 70 percent of the oxygen on Earth is made by the oceans.

It is believed that marine plants create 70 to 80 percent of the air we breathe. Almost all of them comprise marine algae.

8. There are lakes and rivers under the ocean.

When hydrogen and saltwater sulfide mix, it gets much denser than the water surrounding it, allowing it to form a lake that flows under the sea.
