10+ Unknown Facts About Sirius Black

One of Harry Potter’s most iconic characters is Sirius Black. He is not the main character and is only featured in three of the seven books (or four if you include his ghost appearance), but he was a driving force behind the story. The Prisoner of Azkaban especially was all about him.

However, most of his life happened before the books were published. This means that certain facts about Sirius are often forgotten. This is a shame, as this charismatic character has a rich family history. What are some lesser-known facts about this legendary character?

Facts About Sirius Black

1. He ran away from home.

A common misconception is that Sirius was kicked from his home while he was still at Hogwarts. He had to move in with James Potter, his best friend. Although it is easy to think that Sirius was kicked out, his mother was really awful, and it’s not true. At the tender age of 16, he chose to run.

It’s not clear what caused him to break, but it is safe to assume that his Black family was very difficult to live with and that his mother was abusive. Sirius deserved better.

2. He was imprisoned at 22

Gary Oldman plays Sirius in the movies. This is an older actor. Sirius might be in his 40s or 50s at the time of the movies, and he was imprisoned ten years before Harry founded Hogwarts.

The truth is that Sirius was 22 years old when he was captured in Azkaban. The Marauders were young and went through the war. This is a tragic fact that isn’t explained enough. His story is made worse by the fact that James and Lily both died at 22.

3. He Was Super Intelligent

It is often forgotten that Sirius was a highly intelligent person. One, he became an Animagus. This is something that most people would never be able to do. We know very few of them in the series, and they tend not to be the best. Sirius did this while still at Hogwarts. This shows how impressive his wizarding skills were, even as a student.

His exams were also reported to have been easy, so he seemed very intelligent.

4. He wasn’t interested in romance

In the books, Sirius is not mentioned as a romantic interest. Harry is surprised to see Snape’s Pensieve. Hopefully, a girl is looking at him, and he doesn’t seem to notice. It seems odd that his hormones weren’t making him insane since he was only 15 at the time. Many fans speculate that he may have been gay or asexual due to this and the fact that he never had a girlfriend.

5. His Animagus form was extraordinary

Sirius’ Animagus dog form is called Padfoot. The shaggy crossbreed dog in the movies is recognizable, but it looks a lot like a real dog.

His dog form, which is described in the books as being the size of a bear, makes him even more frightening. It’s no wonder Harry believed he saw the Grim when he first saw him. Ron suffered injuries after being dragged away by him. Sirius isn’t a man of two minds, so his Animagus form wasn’t easy. We won’t know how he got past the Azkaban bars in this form.

6. He tried to kill Snape

However, he wasn’t always a good guy. Sirius pulled a prank on Severus’ Snapchat, and it might have even killed him. He took him to the Whomping Willow because he was sick of his curiosity. There, he learned Remus Lupin would transform into a wolf. This was dangerous for Snape, who could have died. It also revealed Remus’ secret, which was very disloyal.

James was able to stop Snape from getting too close, which made it clear that Sirius wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine. It was probably the influence of the family.

7. And overall, wasn’t a very nice student

The attempted murder of Sirius was a very serious incident. However, it wasn’t an isolated incident. Sirius is an honorable character in the books. It’s easy to imagine him fighting the war against Voldemort and believing he was a good person. But if you recall Order of the Phoenix and the flashbacks Harry saw through Snape’s Pensieve, you’ll see that this was not true.

In his youth, he was a relentless bully, and while Snape might have deserved it for the blood prejudice and darkness he displayed, Sirius was far less noble than Snape when it came time to participate in James’ abuse.

8. He wasn’t the only Black in his generation to be disowned

Sirius was not the only oddball to be thrown out of the Black family tree. Bellatrix, Narcissa and Narcissa were his cousins. Andromeda was a sister to Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born — these are the parents of Nymphadora Tonks. Although it is not clear if Andromeda was against the blood supremacists or fell in love with someone they considered below her, it is safe to assume that she did not share many Black family values.

Sirius was at least able to have some company as a Black outcast family.

9. He is closely related to The Weasleys.

Strange relations can occur between pure-bloods, even if they are not expected. Harry and Voldemort may be distantly related. You may not realize that Sirius is more closely related than most people think to the Weasleys. Arthur Weasley is his cousin once removed, and this is evident from the relationships between all the characters in the series.

Although it isn’t mentioned in movies or books, it is easy to see the connections with the extensive family information J.K. Rowling provides. Although the Blacks aren’t happy to be so closely related, they may not be too happy to have been blood traitors.

10. When Peter escaped, he did laugh.

The story of Sirius, who was depicted as a villain in most of the third book, was that he “killed” Peter in an explosion and then tracked him down. It is taken as a sign of both his madness and his evil.

Most people assumed that Sirius had been proven innocent and that he was laughing because Peter had just escaped. J.K. Rowling later confirmed that he laughed because he had just lost all his possessions, and the noise was much more joyful than it was hysterical.
